‘Ookwe Park is the first park returned to the care of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan and Sogorea Te’ Land Trust through a collaboration with the City of Richmond and the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission. In July 2021, ‘Ookwe was officially opened with a ceremony attended by tribal and community members.’Ookwe Park was featured on ABC New LOCALISH segment highlighting the historical significance of Marina Parkway shellmound site. A new small yet very special shellmound park has opened to celebrate the Ohlone Indian’s contribution to Richmond’s history. ‘Ookwe means “Healing” in the Chochenyo Ohlone language. The plants in the park are all related healing including; soaproot, elderberry, dogbane and manzanita. Artist Masayuki Nagase worked with the Ohlone Family and the Richmond Arts and Culture Commission over several years to design, fabricate and install this lovely quiet place to visit in Richmond.
