Ursus Redivivus, Recycled Bear is a 7,200-pound, kinetic and interactive bear sculpture created by artists Alex Nolan and Chad Glashoff. The sculpture stands almost 12 feet tall and is made almost entirely from salvaged escalator parts from a Berkeley department store remodel, as well as recycled tools. The name “Ursus Redivivus” translates from Latin to “Reborn Bear” or “Revived Bear,” which reflects the artists’ intent to reference the rebuilding of an endangered species and the sculpture’s construction from recycled materials.
The sculpture has been on temporary display in various locations in California’s Bay Area, including Berkeley, Orinda, and Lafayette, where it has served as a piece of public art that sparks conversation about history, ecology, and sustainability.
