Vanessa Zakas grew up in the Bay Area. When she moved with her family to Morocco as a teenager, painting became an expression of the colorful, unique culture she encountered there. She went on to study in Italy, where she was classically trained and influenced by the surrounding art and architecture. Now back in the Bay Area, her work is often inspired by life experiences, local scenery, and narrative concepts.

I mainly work with oil paint on canvas as well as ink sketches and illustrations. My favorite subject is people and their surroundings, though I often paint other subjects as well. Most of my art is inspired by my travels and experiences around the world. I try to use art in a powerful way, to tell a story and to express something that can not only be seen but also felt. My desire is to share the fleeting moments of life in a deep and beautiful way, to paint those moments as if frozen in time
