Balsamorhiza, painted by the talented Mona Caron, was inspired by the resilient native plant balsamroot found in high concentrations on Mt. Diablo. Indigenous peoples used the plant medicinally – it’s an antiseptic and for sustenance. Located in the Simpson Family Courtyard at the Lesher Center, the 28-foot high mural appears to emerge out of a flowerbed. For the Swiss born, San Francisco based muralist, this placement is intentional, evoking “the land beneath our feet, imagining the taproot of this plant reaching far into the ground. It thus becomes a metaphor of culture: place-based, yet reaching higher; wildly occurring but precious, nourishing and healing.”
