“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.” -Albert Einstein
To live on the land is a powerful thing. The land holds memories of love and regret, and of hopes for the future. The land holds up a sky thunderstruck with wind and clouds, rain and snow. Land is steady, yet all that lives on the land is quick. Structures rise and fall. Lives flicker by. Storms abate.
A painter of landscapes has all these riches available, people and trees, horizons and skylines, stones and weeds, roiling surf and amazing skies replete with emotion. The mysteries of the landscape are unfolded in painted hues, in shrouded hollows and brilliant peaks.
I use abstraction to explore what is numinous in the land and in those who live on it and invite others to share in that spirit of wonder.
