There is something unattainable about animals because they live in a different sensory world than us. They are familiar, yet mysterious — this is what compels me to paint them. The creatures and plants among us are all gifted in different ways, and all of them are important.
The details, and sometimes lack of details, can infer a magical complexity in visual art. I’m inspired by abstract realism, and how smearing edges evokes intrigue. I’m often drawn to art that captures the essence of a subject. The effort of reducing, of “less is more”, gives us all a more remarkable viewing experience.
Art is a profound path to connecting with others. It’s an honor when my painting is on your wall, because you’re making a commitment to view it regularly. In a world full of distractions, art grounds us through its dependability. It’s always there, always familiar, and when you keep looking it, always new.
I’m a painter living in the Bay Area, California. I studied at Washington University in St. Louis, with an emphasis in Visual Communication. After college, I studied character animation and worked as a Character Animator on feature films for Blue Sky, DreamWorks, and Pixar. Since having children, my priorities shifted, and my main passion and artistic outlet has been painting with oils.
